How to Check Criminal History in Pierce County
No single Pierce County tool answers every record question. Start with the kind of event you need to confirm. A filed felony or misdemeanor belongs in Wisconsin Circuit Court Access, usually called WCCA. A recent booking may appear in the sheriff's weekly roster. The arrest narrative stays with the agency whose officer wrote it. A statewide repository response comes from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Crime Information Bureau.
Gather the full name, likely spelling variants, an approximate date, and a case or report number if one is known. A birth date can help distinguish a common name, but a public name match is not positive identification. Use this sequence for a careful Pierce County criminal record check:
- Search WCCA, choose Pierce County, and look for a case by number or party name.
- Compare the county, filing date, charge, counsel, status, and public birth data before treating a result as the right person.
- Check the weekly jail roster only for current or recent local custody.
- Ask the arresting agency for its incident report, then ask the Pierce clerk for complaint, judgment, or other public case papers.
- Order a WORCS response when the question calls for Wisconsin's statewide repository record.
Two Pierce County Record Buildings
Pierce County splits the two most useful local record counters between Ellsworth addresses. The Pierce County Courthouse at 414 W. Main Street holds the Circuit Court and clerk. That is the place to ask for a public criminal complaint, judgment, sentence, or other filed court paper that WCCA does not display. The Pierce County Law Enforcement Center at 555 W. Overlook Drive houses the sheriff and jail. It is the better starting point for sheriff incident reports, booking facts, and current custody questions.

Sheriff Records
555 W. Overlook Dr.
Ellsworth, WI 54011

Monday through Friday, 8:00 to 4:00
The distinction prevents a common Pierce County mistake. The sheriff does not become custodian of a court judgment merely because deputies made the arrest, and the circuit clerk does not hold a city officer's full incident narrative merely because charges were later filed.
The same split applies when a reader wants copies. Sheriff Records accepts oral or written requests, though a written description creates a clearer record if access is denied. It publishes a charge of $0.25 per page for accident, incident, and added-information copies, plus $5 for a reproduced CD or DVD. The clerk should be asked separately about plain or certified court papers. Neither counter should be assumed to hold the other's source file, even when both files arose from the same event.
Official Wisconsin Background Checks
The Wisconsin DOJ Division of Law Enforcement Services, Crime Information Bureau maintains the central state history repository. Its official background-check overview explains that repository products draw from arrest fingerprints and reports sent by police, prosecutors, courts, and corrections. The public can request another adult subject's Wisconsin response, while juvenile information is withheld unless another law permits release.
The official DOJ overview is shown below as a source view for Pierce County readers.
That state response is broader than one Pierce County case, but it can still be incomplete when fingerprints or final outcomes were not reported.
Pierce County WORCS Criminal Records
WORCS is an order system, not a free Pierce County court docket. An unregistered user may choose Submit Request and should retain the order reference number needed to retrieve the result. Registration is optional. U.S. Bank handles payment, and DOJ keeps results available for six months. A name and birth date can narrow the response, yet fingerprints remain the positive identity method.
The DOJ fee and access answers document the main product differences.
Use the fee table to pick a product by scope, not by price alone.
| Official product | Fee | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| WORCS online name check | $7 | Wisconsin CIB response; a name match is not positive identification |
| DOJ paper general request | $12 | Mail request with a stamped return envelope; allow ten business days plus mailing |
| DOJ Police Certificate | $20 | Mail-only Wisconsin search supported by a fingerprint card and letter |
| FBI Identity History Summary | $18 FBI fee | Subject-only national fingerprint product; an approved channeler may charge more |
Types of Criminal Records
Pierce County criminal history is built from records with different owners and purposes. The police report describes the event and allegations. A booking entry records intake at the jail. The court file tracks what prosecutors charged and how each count ended. CIB assembles qualifying statewide submissions, while Wisconsin DOC maintains prison and community-supervision data. The sex offender registry is another statutory record, not a general conviction index.
- Incident and arrest report: held by the Pierce sheriff or the city, state, or university police agency that created it.
- Booking and custody record: held by the Pierce jail and reflected only in part on the weekly public roster.
- Circuit case file: held by the Pierce clerk, with WCCA serving as the public index rather than the official file.
- CIB history response: a statewide record tied to data reported to Wisconsin DOJ, often through fingerprints.
- DOC and registry record: separate public tools for prison, supervision, and statutory registration status.
Pierce County Jail Booking Records
The sheriff publishes a PDF roster instead of an interactive inmate database. It has no search form, account, dropdown, or export. Its changing day-based file is replaced, so it is best read as a current or recent custody snapshot rather than a lasting Pierce County arrest archive. A row may show a surname-first name, booking and release times, arresting agency, charge description, custody status, per-charge status, and total bail.
The roster does not show mugshots, birth dates, physical descriptions, booking numbers, statute classes, cells, warrant numbers, or scheduled court dates. If a needed booking fact is absent, call sheriff records or submit a narrow public-record request. Once someone enters state prison, use the Wisconsin DOC Person in Our Care or Client Search rather than the Pierce County jail list.
The DOC locator entry point is pictured from its official source.
This statewide custody tool answers a different question from the sheriff's weekly local roster.
Pierce County Police Incident Records
Police reports remain with the agency that wrote them. River Falls accepts a detailed form and offers pickup, mail, or email delivery. Prescott uses a city web form, while its police staff review incident and crash copy requests. Ellsworth asks readers to call the police office for inspection or copies. Spring Valley, Elmwood, Wisconsin State Patrol, and UW-River Falls Police also keep their own originating files.
An incident report is the agency narrative, not the jail's custody row or the court's prosecuted case. Requesters should name the date, place, involved person, report number if known, and the exact item sought. Active-investigation facts, juvenile material, victim or witness data, driver information, and health information can be withheld or redacted under the rules that apply to the custodian.
What a Pierce County Criminal Record Shows
Contents depend on the record selected. WCCA can show a case number, caption, filing date, case type and status, judge, attorneys, counts, statutes, severity, disposition, sentence, financial balance, and dated court events. A CIB response can include arrest dates and charges, prosecution facts, findings, sentences, and DOC admission or release entries. Protected processing may use a Wisconsin SID, Social Security number, and other identifiers that do not all appear to the public.
| Name and identifiers | Names, aliases, birth data where public, Wisconsin SID, and a WiUPIN after a successful identity challenge |
|---|---|
| Arrest and booking | Event date, agency, alleged charges, booking time, custody state, bail, and release when published |
| Charges and law | Filed count, statute, felony or misdemeanor class, and charge severity in the court record |
| Disposition | The outcome of each count, which may differ from the allegation listed at booking |
| Sentence | Custody, probation, financial terms, restitution, and other court-ordered conditions when public |
| Custody or supervision | County jail, state prison, probation, parole, or extended-supervision information in the system that owns it |
Pierce County Criminal Charge Classes
Wisconsin separates crimes into felonies and misdemeanors. A felony is an offense punishable by imprisonment in state prison. Other crimes are misdemeanors. Felony classes run from Class A through Class I, while misdemeanor classes run from A through C. The class sets a maximum range, but it does not predict the sentence in one Pierce County case.
Municipal ordinance violations are civil forfeiture matters, even when a citation may appear as a circuit ordinance case because the municipality has no municipal court. River Falls and Prescott municipal courts hear their own ordinance and traffic matters. Ellsworth routes citations to Pierce County Circuit Court. Read the case type, statute, severity, and count disposition together before describing an event as a criminal conviction.
Pierce County CIB Record Flow
An arresting agency first creates its report. If the person is booked, the Pierce County jail creates a separate custody record. Fingerprints and arrest facts may then reach the Crime Information Bureau. Prosecutors decide whether to file charges, the Circuit Court creates a case, and CCAP reports qualifying outcomes back to CIB. Wisconsin DOC later adds prison, release, or supervision events.
Record flow: Police report › Pierce booking › CIB submission › prosecutor decision › Circuit Court case › disposition report › DOC event.
A gap can form at any handoff. An event without supporting fingerprints may later appear in WCCA after charging yet remain absent from CIB. A delayed disposition can leave the state history incomplete. DOJ form DJ-LE-247 allows a person to challenge a wrong charge, missing or wrong outcome, identity theft, or a false match. Court data errors must also be corrected with the court that owns them.
The CIB contact page lists record-check support for those follow-up questions.
Pierce County readers can use that state contact after first checking whether the disputed fact began in the local court or police file.
Public Access Laws
The Wisconsin Public Records Law begins with a strong policy of access, but it does not make each field public. Pierce County custodians apply statutory limits and the common-law balancing test. Juvenile information, victim and witness identifiers, health records, driver data, restricted TIME-system material, sealed information, Social Security numbers, and similar data may be withheld or redacted. A written denial should identify its legal or public-interest basis and explain the route for review.
Key Wisconsin laws:
Wis. Stat. §19.31 states the public-access policy.
Wis. Stat. §19.35 governs inspection, copies, request procedure, and allowed fees.
Wis. Stat. §165.83 sets CIB reporting and repository duties.
Wis. Stat. §973.015 controls the narrow adult expungement remedy.
Wis. Stat. §301.45 governs sex-offender registration and publication.
Pierce County Warrant Verification
No verified public Pierce County active-warrant search or statewide Wisconsin warrant portal was found. A WCCA docket may show a warrant event within one filed case, while the jail roster can label a booked matter as a warrant or failure to appear. Neither source is a complete list of outstanding warrants.
For your own possible warrant, inspect the relevant court case, then confirm the case number, issuing court, charge, bond, and live status with the Pierce clerk, the issuing municipal court, counsel, and the sheriff at 715-273-5051. Do not walk into an agency based on a shared name or stale online entry. A court update can take time to move through other systems, and sealed or juvenile warrants will not become public merely because someone requests them.
Note: Arrest warrants, missed-court bench warrants, and search warrants have different purposes and different public-access limits.
Sealed, Expunged & Restricted
Wisconsin adult expungement under §973.015 is narrow. The sentencing judge must order it at sentencing, generally for an eligible offense with a maximum term of six years or less committed before age 25. The court must find that the person benefits without harm to society. The order takes effect only after successful completion of the sentence, including no later conviction, no probation revocation, and satisfaction of all conditions.
Forms CR-266 and CR-267 address a qualifying case without probation or incarceration. They do not create a broad petition for someone who never received an expungement order at sentencing. Court expungement also does not automatically erase the police report or the CIB fingerprint cycle. A subject seeking removal of an eligible arrest cycle uses the separate mail-only DJ-LE-250B process with two rolled index fingerprints. Juvenile expungement follows §938.355(4m).
- Disposition
- The outcome of a charge, such as a conviction, dismissal, or acquittal.
- Expungement
- Wisconsin's limited sentencing-time court remedy, not a broad erasure of every related record.
- SID
- The state subject identifier used within Wisconsin criminal-history processing.
- WiUPIN
- An identifier that can help prevent a corrected false name match from recurring.
Pierce County Supervision Records
Probation is not managed by a Pierce County probation department. The Wisconsin DOC Division of Community Corrections supervises probation, parole, and extended supervision. Start with the DOC Person in Our Care or Client Search, compare the public sentence in WCCA, and contact the proper DCC unit if more public status detail is needed. A county jail roster does not serve as a probation list.
Wisconsin VINE at 1-888-944-8463 supports county-jail victim notification. DOC NOTIS is different: it is free but limited to enrolled victims, survivors, and witnesses. Registration under the Wisconsin Public Sex Offender Registry can also continue after prison and active supervision end. The official Wisconsin registry should therefore be checked on its own terms.
The registry entry screen is shown from that official state source.
The registry is a statutory publication tool, not a complete list of all Pierce County sex-offense convictions.
Pierce County River Falls Records
River Falls is Pierce County's largest incorporated place by the county-side estimate, yet the city crosses into St. Croix County. A River Falls mailing address does not establish which county handled an arrest. Confirm the incident location, arresting agency, and booking county before searching the Pierce roster or contacting the Pierce clerk. That one step can prevent a false conclusion that no record exists.
Local report routes also differ. River Falls Police accepts its own form and keeps city incident material. Prescott Police uses a city web request and separate report process. Ellsworth Police directs requesters to call for inspection or copies, and Ellsworth has no municipal court. State criminal charges from all three places reach Circuit Court when Pierce County has jurisdiction, but city ordinance records remain with the proper municipal or circuit venue.
Criminal Records by City in Pierce County
City guides keep the focus on the first local custodian. River Falls and Prescott each maintain a municipal court for noncriminal ordinance and traffic cases. Ellsworth routes citations to Pierce County Circuit Court. Each police agency controls its own incident reports, even when the sheriff later handles dispatch or booking.
